With all the waterways around Duval County, you’ll find many beachfront and riverfront neighborhoods that have quaint downtown streets, shops, and restaurants. 

The Jacksonville area has many neighborhoods throughout Duval County including Arlington, Airport - Northside, Beaches - Mayport, Downtown - Riverfront, Madarin, Southside, Westside-Ortega-Orange Park, San Marco, Riverside, and Amelia Island - Fernandina Beach.  Just south of Duval County, you’ll find Ponte Vedra Beach and St. Augustine in St Johns County.

The incorporated cities within Duval County are Atlantic Beach, Baldwin, Jacksonville, Jacksonville Beach, and Neptune Beach.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida with its headquarters in Jacksonville is the oldest insurance company in the Duval County area.  Today, there are many other health insurance companies accepted around Jacksonville including United Healthcare, Cigna, Aetna, Principal, AvMed, and Humana.

Another prestigious medical center in Jacksonville is Shands Hospital.  The main Shands hospital is based in Gainesville and is a teaching hospital that works with the University of Florida.  The Shands Jacksonville location serves as a Level 1 trauma center.  One of Shand’s specialities is proton therapy treatment which uses a beam to eliminate diseased tissue and tumors.

Large appliance are prohibited from landfills and must be collected separately. Hazardous Waster

Used Oil is prohibited in land fills.  You can recycle used motor oil at one of the following Jacksonville retailers:  NAPA Auto Parts, Texaco Express Lube, Prolube, Jacksonville Beach Marine (boaters), Advance Discount Auto Parts, and Auto Zone.

Electronic Wastes should not be thrown out with the garbage collection.  Instead, they can be recycled by dropping them off at the Household Hazardous Waste Facility or dropped off at a Mobile Collection Event.  Items that can be dropped off include computer monitors, computer terminals, CPUs, keyboards, televisions, printers, scanners, stereo equipment, radios, VCRs, DVDs, camcorders, desk and mobile phones, pagers, power tools, small kitchen appliances, and health and beauty appliances.

Public School Registration

To enroll your child in a Duval County public school, you must go to the school and show proof of residence, immunization, birth date, and a physical within the last 12 months.  Kindergartners must be five (5) years old on or before September 1 of the school year. If you are transferring from another city or state, you must also bring official school records and and proof of previous residence.

Private Schools in Jacksonville

Choosing a private school for your child’s education doesn’t come easy.  You need to interview the school to verify their credentials.  Also, it’s important to ask parents what they like or don’t like about the school.  What are the teacher’s qualifications?  What techniques does the school use to assess a student’s academic achievements and improvement areas, social interaction, exercise and sports, foreign languages, and other areas of interest like music and art.

Some important questions to ask:  Accreditation, minimum teacher credentials required, student teacher ratio, standardized testing, specialized testing, sports programs, music and art programs, parent involvement, how behavioral issues are handled or bullying, and how the school determines whether a child is achieving his/her fullest potential. 

One of the largest private schools is Trinity Christian Academy that offers Pre-K through 12th grade.  There are close to 1,500 students with a graduating class of 100 plus students.

Duval County Public Libraries

The Jacksonville Public Library system has 21 libraries and branches in the area.  In addition to providing a great resource of information, they also offer classes, programs, and clubs.  Some of the popular ones are the Art Walk, Computer Classes, Book Club, Photography Club, and Teen Programs.

Jacksonville Parks and Recreation

The Jacksonville area has the largest urban park system in the United States.  More than 111,600 acres are in the park land and ecological preserve areas.  There are numerous outdoor activities to enjoy around the area.

Vehicle Registration
To register your vehicle in Duval County, you must provide proof of ownership, proof of Florida auto insurance (Florida insurance agent or broker), VIN (vehicle identification number), and odometer reading.

If registering your vehicle in Florida for the first time, you must have the VIN number verified at the Tax Collector’s Office or by a law enforcement officer, Florida notary public, or Florida motor vehicle dealer.

Duval County Courts

The court system in Duval County offers many services for its residents that have legal implications involve record keeping and financial obligations.  Some of these departments are:  Marriage Licenses, Family Law (adoptions, divorces, legal custody, domestic violence), Civil Cases (claims above $15,000), Foreclosures, Felony Crimes, Tax Deeds, Public Records, and other services.

Jury Service - If you are 18 years or older and a US citizen or legal citizen, you may be summoned to jury duty.  A jury is selected based on a fair cross section of the community including working persons, retirees, different social backgrounds, and so forth.  There are only two options on how you can be exempt:  Optional Exemption and Mandatory Disqualified Exemption.  Options exemption including pregnancy, 70 years or older, stay at home parent with a child age 6 or under, and other exemptions. Mandatory disqualified exemption includes non US citizen, convicted felon, work for the Clerk of Court, and various other exemptions.

Traffic Tickets - If you receive a traffic ticket in Duval County and it is a moving violation with points, you can avoid points added to your drivers license by completing a Florida DMV traffic school.  You have the first 30 days of receiving the ticket to pay the fine with Duval County Clerk of Court.  Next, you have 90 days from the ticket’s date to complete traffic school and send in your Certificate of Completion.  The Clerk’s office will close out your ticket and not put points on your license.

Pet Registration and Licenses
The Jacksonville city ordinance requires that dogs, cats and ferrets be vaccinated for rabies and have their city license renewed every year.  It’s important before hurricane season begins June 1 that your pet(s) is licensed. Duval County has Pet Friendly Shelters during hurricanes and other natural disasters but but they will only accept licensed and vaccinated pets.

Duval County Emergency Shelters

As a coastal community, Duval County can easily be subjected to tropical storms and hurricanes.  These storms can cause extensive wind, water, and flood damage to homes and communities.

If your neighborhood is ordered to evacuated or you are more comfortable in a temporary shelter, the American Red Cross is the lead agency overseeing the shelters which are commonly located at schools.
